Habitat for Humanity ReStore plans to open?a new Central Peoria?location?after closing its University Street store earlier this month ahead of a car wash locating there.?

The new store at 3015 N.?Sterling?Ave. is slated to open June 21?and?will?be located in?a spot once occupied by a CVS pharmacy,?next to Big?Lots.

Habitat for Humanity’s new location will give it 6,000 more square feet to work with?than its University location, allowing it?to expand its?in-store product offerings, according to Habitat’s executive director, Lea Anne?Schmidgall.?

Store manager Jason Calef, left, and delivery driver Robert Tucker position a newly donated sofa on the floor in the new Habitat for Humanity ReStore at 3015 N. Sterling Ave. in Peoria.

“On University we really didn’t have room for tile or bathroom vanities because we really just didn’t have the room,” Schmidgall said. “With this, we are going to have extra room. So, people might find new things they didn’t find at the University store, perhaps some carpeting people donate, things like that.”?

Opening a new location was a must for Habitat for Humanity after?a building sale?forced it?to relocate from?the corner of?Glen Avenue and University.?Club Car Wash bought the 66-year-old Glen Haven Shopping Center that Habitat once called home and plans to tear it down.

Volunteers Susan Miller, left, and Sandy Wyss look over some donated clothing they’re unboxing and arranging for sale at the new Habitat for Humanity ReStore, 3015 N. Sterling Ave., Peoria.

“We really like that location, we have done really well there, and we definitely would not have moved had not it been for the situation,” Schmidgall said. “But we understand the situation, and there were no hard feelings. Obviously, it just was a business transaction, and we took it as an opportunity, maybe as a small challenge, but not as a detriment.”?

Habitat for Humanity wanted to make sure any new store location allowed for an easy flow of traffic in and out of the parking lot?while keeping the donation process simple as well.

“We wanted to be where we could be most helpful to the community,” Schmidgall said. “We feel like being where we are on Sterling, with (South Side) Mission Mart being there and Big Lots, people can come, and it can kind of be a one-stop shop.”

Habitat for Humanity employee Michael Wilks works on re-carpeting some areas of the massive new ReStore resale shop at 3015 N. Sterling Ave. in Peoria. The ReStore shop is moving from a much smaller shop in the GlenHaven Shopping Center to a former CVS pharmacy site.

Schimdgall?said Habitat officials explored several potential locations, but the Sterling Avenue spot gave?them the traffic flow they wanted and “good price” for rent.

Thus far, the moving process?has?been “very smooth” for Habitat, according to Schmidgall, thanks to the help of volunteers.

“Our goal is threefold: Help out the community, make money for Habitat so we can build more homes, and help families and be a part of the community where people?can come and get resources and things,” Schmidgall said.
